Inside, on Sunday mornings, God feels lonely as the prayers of the sparse congregation echo around the walls. English Catholicism diminishes, and the faith is only kept alive by the influx of Eastern Europeans. Tonight, in the darkness, the gargoyles stare out from their vantage points across the city, half-remembering the blacked-out nights and the drone of the Luftwaffe, and the bombs that fell from the sky.
