Gas Hill

This giant gasometer has been part of the Norwich skyline since around 1880, and is the only one left in the city. Although it’s listed, there are moves afoot to dismantle it, and build up to fifteen houses on the site. The City Council say that they’re looking at all options, including the possibility of incorporpating the structure into any new development. I hope they leave it alone; there are plenty of other brownfield sites in the area, and this skeletal ghost of the city’s past is, to me, a thing of stark beauty.
