Whose idea was this? Castle Mall has never really been the most uplifting shopping experience, and even from the start it seemed to be run-down and moribund, too full of the sort of businesses that discerning customers went out of their way to avoid. Now it’s a thrift-store ghetto, a half-empty cavern of cheap consumerism that has to constantly re-invent itself in order to survive. It’s staggered from one financial crisis to another for a quarter of a century, and as far as the city grandees are concerned, it’s another rather embarrassing blot on the commercial centre of town.
