One of the finest churches in the country, and situated at the psychological centre of the city, St. Peter Mancroft is thought to take its name from magna crofta, the large croft or open field which later became the site of the market place. It was begun in 1430, took a quarter of a century to build, and is a magnificent and imposing building. The remains of Sir Thomas Browne, the 17th century scholar of international renown, lie within.
